Here are some basic best practices for fire safety in the home and for business:
- Install fire/smoke/carbon monoxide detectors and fire alarms according to local fire regulations, especially in areas where fire is at increased risk:
- Risk factors include places where flammable substances are stored, where open flames are used, etc.
- If your fire/smoke/carbon monoxide detectors or fire alarms are battery powered, set a schedule so the batteries are changed once a year.
- Test fire/smoke/carbon monoxide detectors and fire alarms on a monthly basis.
- Inspect and test fire safety systems at least once a year.
- Fire/Smoke/Carbon Monoxide detectors over 10 years old need to be replaced.
- Create an Emergency Response Plan for your home or business and include in it a plan for fire:
- Make sure all employees or family members are familiar with the Emergency Response Plan and know their roles;
- Practice the plan at least twice a year;
- Include alternate evacuation methods;
- Instruct employees and family members on how to extinguish clothes using stop, drop, and roll;
- Plan to have employees evacuate themselves and any visitors or customers of your business in case of fire;
- Those you evacuate should know to stay outside and not to reenter the building;
- You can also ask your local fire department for help when forming your Emergency Response Plan;
- Use a fire safety system that alerts the local fire department.
- Alternatively, include notifying them as part of your Emergency Response Plan.
