Making an Emergency Response Plan is an important step in protecting your business, employees, and customers in the case of an emergency. When it comes to fire safety, there are several things that you can do to make sure you are prepared, but most of it comes down to planning ahead. Remember, when disaster strikes, the first priority must be protecting your customers and employees, and the second should be mitigating the disaster. Once you have a plan, the first step is making sure you and your employees know how to properly implement it.

In planning for an emergency, there are a few steps that need to be taken:

  • Being informed that there is an emergency situation relies on active and maintained fire alarm systems. Fire can also strike from outside the business such as a wildfire, so you should also have a way to monitor emergency alerts for your area.
  • You need to know where to evacuate to that will be safe for the various circumstances that may arise.
  • There needs to be a planned evacuation route that your employees know and can implement, helping remove customers and themselves from danger.
  • You need to have a plan for handling communication with authorities, such as a monitored fire system, alerting them to the emergency.
  • Finally, you need to take into consideration the specific needs of your business or employees and factor them into the plan.

Once the above has been accounted for, you should be well on your way to having a working plan that can then be put into practice.
